Item-Level Security for Reports

Hello,

Can somebody explain the process for implementing Item-Level security for reports? My requirement is as follows:

I have some reports pertaining to a specific department, where in I deployed them to a specific folder on Reporting Services. Now I need to give exclusive read access to those reports for the users in that department. They should not be able to create any folders / new reports etc.

The steps I have followed:

1. Deployed the reports from VS 2005 to a specific folder called "TheirReports" and in this I placed the Data source also as a seperate folder.

2. I clicked on Site Settings in Report Manager and then clicked on Configure Item-Level role definitions.

3. Clicked on New Role and gave a name as ReportsBrowser and checked the options --> "View Data sources / View folders / View reports / View resources"

4. Now I went back to the specific folder and clicked on Properties -> Security -> New Role Assignment.

5. Added the necessary users binding them to ReportsBroser role.

When I'm checking from the user machine, they are able to create new folders etc.

Appreciate your ideas.

Thanks

Nobody has dealt so far with Item-Level security for reports.sql

Italic characters change to normal style when exported to PDF

In my reports, italic characters are changed to normal style when exported
to pdf.
Is there a way to prevent this style change?
Not : SP1 is installed.
Thanks...This is working in our tests. You might try switching fonts to see if it
makes a differnce. We do not embed fonts into the document.

Ok, problem occurs when Chinese italic characters are used in the exported
pdf documents.
I use "MS Arial Unicode" font.

Issues with temp tables in stored procedures using OLEDB connectio

I am having an issue when converting some of my reports to SQL reporting
services 2005. All of my reports use an OLEDB connection that point to a UDL
file so that we can easily change connection strings as needed without having
to touch the report server. They all use stored procedures to obtain the
data. The issues I am running into is with stored procedures that use temp
tables. Anything that is done in a stored procedure after the temp table is
created is not shown in the report designer on the data tab within visual
studio 2005. Iâ've read a few posts about this problem but it seems like no
one at Microsoft has been able to reproduce it. I have been able to
reproduce it with a simple example using the NorthWind database. I will
include the stored procedure and the rdl file below. I set the report to
prompt for credentials instead of using the UDL file but the same problem
occurs. It will occur with Windows authentication as well. If I change the
connection type to â'Microsoft SQL Serverâ' then it will work correctly the
problem is that I will not be able to use UDL or DSN files. My method worked
just fine with RS 2000. What has changed with RS 2005 to cause this issue?
Any ideas on how I might get this to work?
Thanks,
-Nathan

Second, exactly what is happening? No data? No field list? Any error?
I just had a case where I would get an error about a temp table (I use temp
tables all the time, why this particular SP had a problem I don't know).
What worked for me was to refresh the fields (button is to the right of the
...). I then had a field list. After that I could execute the query in the
data tab and I got data back.

The simple answer is there is no data, no field list, and no error. I
should have mentioned that I have tried refreshing the field list several
times and no fields are returned. I've tried this on two separate machines.
The field list is empty and when I try to run the sp within the data tab it
returns no results. Were you not able to reproduce the problem with an OLEDB
connection type? What I found strange was that anything in the sp before the
temp table declaration worked fine. It's as if the meta data describing the
table structure isn't returned. Any ideas? Let me know if I can provide you
with any more information. Thanks for the quick reply.

create PROCEDURE [dbo].[Pr_TestingRSProblem]

return
I did not use the wizard. I added a report. I went to the data tab. Added a
new dataset. My shared data source credentials were windows authentication.
When creating the dataset I changed the data type to stored procedure and
put in the name of the stored procedure as the query string (do not put in
exec, just put in the name of the procedure). I get an error and no field
list. I click on refresh the field list I get a field list and now I can
execute the query and get data back in the data tab.

use OLEDB. I tried ODBC (which is what I use with Sybase) but also had a
proble with that. Against SQL Server I don't use OLEDB or ODBC, just ODBC
against Sybase (for which I don't have this problem). Weird. Sorry, other
than duplicating the problem there isn't much more I can do to help.

The funny thing is that if you try making the same report in the previous
version of RS within VS2003 it works fine. That is with it connecting to the
same DB server (SQL 2005). This seems like an unintended â'featureâ' to meâ?¦
Anyone else out there have any ideas?

Before I do does anyone know of a reason why the behavior of the OLEDB
connection would change between rs2000 and rs2005? Does anyone know of any
hot fixes or SPs that might already fix this issue? Iâ'm at a loss at what to
do at this point. This is kind of a show stopper for us with moving to
rs2005.

Issues with Report Manager on both a web server and the report server?

My reports have been run off of a combined IIS/SQL server. I have a new application, which is using the SQL server, but runs on its own web server. The developer would like to deploy his reports to the new IIS server. Are there any issues with just installing a copy of the Report Manager on the new IIS server and putting reports there while continuing to run the original application on the combined server?

TIA

Daniel

Hi,

From your description, it seems that you want to deploy your reporting service on other server than the server with SQLServer, right?

I'm afraid you have to install components for SQLServer reporting service on that new IIS. Only n this way, you can re-configure the settings in SQL Server Reporting Services Configuration, including Web Service Identity, report server and report manager virtual directory, also the new database server's information. After that , you can run your reporting service with other database servers.

For more information on each components of Reporting service, see:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155792.aspx

Thanks.

Michael,

I want to deploy report manager on two servers, the SQL server itself and on another server running just as a web server. I have not found a definitive answer, but based on what I have found I am thinking you can only have one report manager set up.

Regards,

Daniel

Hi,

the SQL server itself and on another server running just as a web server.

No matter how many machines you want to run your Report Manager, you should install the SQLServer client component to enable the SQL Report manager. (connecting a remote database).

Issues with 2 formulas

1.

I have a formula in Crystal Reports 9:

if(isnull({RECORDED_SERVICE.SERVICE_STATUS_MONIKER})) then
{RECORDED_SERVICE.UNITS}
else
if ({RECORDED_SERVICE.SERVICE_STATUS_MONIKER}="FB07BA368454433A989B840BDCE7340F")
then
{RECORDED_SERVICE.UNITS}
else
0

However if the two conditions are false I never get the 0..why?

2.

I have another formula that I want to go through a list of possible contact types, in order, and give me the number. If it gets to one that satisfies the criteria, I want it to give me that number and only that number..so i created a variable called checker. If checker is a 0 then evaluate the condition, if not dont. Heres what I have so far:

NumberVar checker :=0 ;

if ({contact.type} ='0480BE5B1CD54E79B161B533C50AA742') then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if ({contact.type} ='D4A537D6890040C994AD1F32A9E10F66') and checker
<> 1 then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if ({contact.type} ='31C5F9B0FE31462488649C7FB095869B') and checker
<> 1 then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if ({contact.type} ='A42A3BEAC1BB4B9E889E596039ABB485') and checker
<> 1 then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if ({contact.type} ='F119D5D5D79244FBB33B7D0AFCF258E8') and checker
<> 1 then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if ({contact.type} ='4A712FB4C549440499E36538EF2F9E3D') and checker
<> 1 then
{contact.number};
checker := 1;

if checker = 0 then
"No Contact Number"

So it will go to each if statement, if the if statement is true then checker would be set to = 1 and the rest of the if statements below it (and above it for that matter) should be false thus only giving me one contact number..Its not producing a number now and I dont know why, any help is appreciated..thanks

-JimI'm not sure about the answers to you questions, but you can try to use Case Statements instead of If statements, maybe you'll get more accurate results that way? Maybe your first question doesn't work because 0 is not a string?

(I'm not positive if this is the correct syntax)

SELECT CASE {RECORDED_SERVICE.SERVICE_STATUS_MONIKER}
CASE "" : {RECORDED_SERVICE.UNITS}
CASE "FB07BA368454433A989B840BDCE7340F": {RECORDED_SERVICE.UNITS}
CASE ELSE: "0"

Issues using parameterised reports connecting to Oracle using ODBC and Microsoft OLE DB Provider

I have an issue using parameterised reports connecting to Oracle using "ODBC" and "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle" using parameteried reports. The following error is generated "ORA-01008 not all variables bound (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle)" and a similiar one for ODBC. It works fine for simple reports. Do these 2 drivers have issues passing parameters for a remote Oracle query?

Thanks.

It could have something to do with the syntax you are using to pass the parameters. Oracle uses : (colon) instead of @. for SQL Server

See this thread http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=679346&SiteID=1

|||

Hi,

Cheers. Unfortunately that's not the issue. Have query like this:

"select unique change_id from change

where (change.change_id like :changeCategory)"

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

|||

I'm not sure, but I think that depending on which provider you connect with you may need to change the named parameter syntax to unnamed. I think you replace you variable with a question mark (?)

You can give it a go. Other than that I can't really help - not my area of expertise.

Issues running reports from browser vs RS SP2 Viewer

Some people can run reports via IE.
It seems that people running Server 2003 (a slight few) and IE with Enhanced
secutity can't run the reports via IE.
Running reports from our app using the report viewer worked fine at one
point.
Now we've changed something (not sure what) but now the report viewer is
putting up a login dialog box. (If I log in an administrator it does
generate the report.)
Can someone point us in the right direction.
Kyle!I figured it out...
I was a browser setting issue.
The report server must be listed in the Local Intranet and the security for
the Local Intranet must be set to the default level.
This causes the broswer to try to log in with the users credentials. RS is
set up to all all Domain Users to browse (or run programatically) reports.

Issues in SSRS

I need some inputs regarding the

following points related to the SSRS reports:

1. We have a table in

the report and we want to change the display order of the columns when

downloading the report in the CSV format. What could be the possible approach

for this?

2. How to set bookmarks for a report when

downloading the report in the PDF format?

3. We have a table in the report and we

are hiding few cells of the table based on some condition. Now when a particular

cell is made invisible, a blank space exists at the location of that cell. The

requirement is that if we hide one cell, the cell below it must shift above i.e

at the location of the hidden cell.

In SSRS if we hide one row of a table,

then the row below it automatically shifts upwards, but this is not applicable

for a table cell.

Could anyone please provide vaulable

feedback on these points?

Thanks,
S Suresh

1. Not possible

2. Yes, you can create bookmarks for groups in your report by using "Document map label" feature when you edit the group.

3. Instead of having different cells in a row, merge all the cells and then have a rectangle inside that merged cell and then have multiple textboxes inside the rectangle in the same positions as cells were before. When you control the visibility of these textboxes inside a rectangle, they will move up if the visibility of the above cell is hidden.

Issue with sorting reports

Hi,

I'm having an issue with sorting reports. I have an order by in the query which returns the results how I want them, but if I use the auto generated columns and layout they are not in the order that the query returns them. However, if I manually create a new table and put the results in that they are ordered fine.

I am having this problem in reporting services for sql 2000, but my workmate has had exactly the same thing in his reporting for 2005.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

What is the auto generated columns and layout?|||

How can you auto generate columns in sql reporting table? Are you using Visibility expression for the columns in the table to make it look dynamic? Can you provide the query and the report layout you have along with the explanation of the problem?

Issue with running reports on machine that does not have report services

I am trying to run reports from a web application. If I am on the machine
with reporting services then the report will pull up. If I try from a PC
that doesn't have reporting services I get a "Page cannot be displayed"
error. I have checked permissions on most everything I could think of.
Please help. I have been researching and trying to resolve this for over
two weeks. Thanks!

Message posted via http://www.sqlmonster.com|||The report control doesn't require anything to be installed with the
browser. It just renders an iframe that points to the reportserver. This
may sound silly, but just to be sure, perhaps did you specify localhost as
part of the serverurl property of the viewer? If you did, the iframe won't
be pointing at the remote report server, but would still be looking at
localhost a.k.a itself.
Even if you didn't use localhost, from the client, type in what's in the
serverurl property and make sure you can get to the server from the client.
Also, you can always do a view source on the page, look for the iframe and
take a look at the src property.

integrated (not anonymous). Of course, that means giving giving the
users/groups the correct permissions to the reports in the report manager.

Issue with ReportViewer dll and accessing reports

Question,
I have an external web server that uses the ReportViewer dll to point to a
Report Server located internally - Not visible to the outside world just to
the intranet. I get a page not found error when trying to view a report via
the reportviewer dll. I have a feeling this is being caused because the
serverurl property is set to point to the server inside the firewall. I can
run the web app just fine from the intranet but whenever I try externally I
get that page not found problem. I was under the impression that the Report
Server Dll was an ASP.Net server control and would run on the server but it
seems as if it is somehow tied to the client. The reason I think this is it
seems as if the client is looking for localhost which of course doesnt exist
on the clients end. Any help and or tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott EguiresHI, Scott:
I have the same issue. I have a external web cluster to host my website. And
I use the reportview web control to embed the report to my website. My report
server is internally. It works ok from inside, but from outside, I get the
result "The page can not be display". I think it can not find the server.
Did you solve your problem finally? And how did you solve it?
Thanks a lot.

externally without having to pay for an extra SQL Server license. It was a
real pain but it works beautifully and has a fairly nice interface. I still
need to add security to it though.

Issue with Report Manager after SP 2 install

I'm trying to delete reports using Report Manager from the folder

use to work but after SP2, the script behind the button no longer
works.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

multiple reports.
I found a post on a web site that says that it is a known problem with the
SP2 CTP and will be fixed in the final SP2 release.

Issue with printing/exporting reports

Dear ppl,

I have designed a report in Visual Studio 2005. The report have a couple of data regions (table and list) + some free text boxes.. The problem is when i print or export the report to pdf etc, it prints/exports a blank page after every page. e.g. if a report is of 2 pages, it will be printed/exported as Page 1 + Blank Page + Page 2 + Blank Page...

Can any one please tell me what am i missing here?

Awaiting,

just changed the Report Page width to 22cm from 21cm and it started printing/exporting perfectly without any blank pages... I thought the A4 size page width was 21cm..strange innit?

Issue with Export to CSV

Dear Anyone,

Whenever we export reports to CSV, it seems that the column headers in the CSV fileb are the actual column names in the select statement we used in the data set and not the column names that are in the report.

Is there a way to reflect the column names in the report to the CSV file rather than the actual physical column name in the report?

Thanks,
JosephAs there is no explicit binding in RDL between the data columns and the header columns, CSV export uses the names of the controls in the export. You can either change the textbox name or you can override the name using the DataElementName property (on the data tab of the textbox properties dialog). This is just like the XML data output, described here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156020(en-US,SQL.90).aspx. You can also exclude them here (DataElementOutput).

I have asked the documentation people to update the CSV topic.

This happens only for big reports which have say more then 10k rows.

Would you please email me a copy of your .rdl and .rdl.data file as well as the stack trace from the server log file?

The difference was SP1 for SQL Server.|||

Would you please email me a copy of your .rdl and .rdl.data file as well as the stack trace from the server log file?

Thanks, Donovan.

Issue restoring database

I'm running into a problem restoring a database to MSDE.
Actually, osql reports RESTORE DATABASE successfully
worked but when I view the database from enterprise
manager it tells me the database is still "loading..."
Any suggestions?
Sounds like you are using NORECOVERY with the RESTORE command. This will
leave the database expecting additional restores.

Issue publishing reports under Win2k3

I'm trying to publish some reports using the RS tool under Windows
Server 2003 SBS.
It works fine under Win XP but using SBS I get the messages
"The operation you are attempting requires a secure connection
(HTTPS)."
Any ideas?
Cheers
Chris.The rs script uses rs.CreateReport
and this is where the exception occurs.|||On 18 Jun, 18:54, theinvisibleGhost <theinvisibleGh...@.yahoo.com>

I found a similar message here:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.crm/browse_thread/thread/4b3872a882e9bcd7/bdba3dfc3d002231?lnk=st&q=Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.SecureConnectionRequiredException&rnum=1&hl=en#bdba3dfc3d002231
It didn't resolve my issue but I found that my virtual directorys were
corrupted in someway.
I deleted them and then recreated them and my issue was resolved.
