Iterative Calculations Analysis Server 2000

Hi all

I'm looking for some help on an iterative cell calculation. I read somewhere that this can be done using a combination of the calculation pass value and calculation pass depth. I'm still having trouble though.

The easiest way of explaining this is to use an example. Sales reps get incentives based on profit, however incentives affect expenses which in turn affects profits. Using a starting income statement with no incentive about I need to go through about 20 iterations to come an answer.

So basically we have the following lines - (Abridged version )

Income - 10000

Other Expenses - 5000

Incentives = ( Profit * 0.025 )

Profit = ( Income - Other Expenses - Incentives )

Over 20 passes we should have the following

Income - 10000

Other Expenses - 5000

Incentives = 121.95

Profit = 4878.05

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Garron

Hi Garron,

Since your sample only involves iteration, without using data from any specific OLAP cube, the MDX below uses the Foodmart Sales cube only as a place-holder. The CALCULATION_PASS_DEPTH=20 specifies the number of iterations, which should culminate at CALCULATION_PASS_NUMBER = 21. In the Sample MDX App, the Ivalues returned are: Incentives = 121.951, Profit = 4878.049

>>

With Member [Measures].[Income] as '10000'
Member [Measures].[OtherExpenses] as '5000'
Member [Measures].[Incentives] as '0'
Member [Measures].[Profit] as
'[Measures].[Income] - [OtherExpenses]
- [Measures].[Incentives]'

Cell Calculation [IterativeIncentives]
for '({ [Measures].[Incentives] })'
as 'CalculationPassValue([Measures].[Profit],
-1, RELATIVE) * 0.025',
CALCULATION_PASS_NUMBER = 21,
CALCULATION_PASS_DEPTH = 20

select {[Measures].[Income],
[Measures].[OtherExpenses],
[Measures].[Incentives],
[Measures].[Profit] } on columns
from Sales

Here's a link to the AS 2000 BOL section which explains Pass Order:

Understanding Pass Order and Solve Order

Two of the most powerful and, correspondingly, most difficult concepts in Microsoft? SQL Server? 2000 Analysis Services, solve order and pass order together determine the manner in which a cube is resolved when queries are processed. This topic assumes that you have a basic understanding of cubes, custom members, calculated members, and custom rollups.

Thanks for the help.

Is it possible to do this as a calculated cell within a cube?

Thanks

Sure, you could create the same calculated members and cells in a cube, I just used query-scoped calculations as an illustration...

Issues Renaming Analysis Server Instance

Hi Friends

I want to rename My Analysis Services Instance installed on E: Drive. I read an article how to rename the Analysis Service Instance . Then I followed 64-bit path to rename, but it gives the following error rolling back to the original Instance Name:

Registering the new performance counters file:

LoadPerfCounterTextStrings for file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\OLAP\bin\msmdctr.ini failed with error code 2

The System cannot find the file Specified

Has anybody came across this issue. Any workarounds ?

Thanks

Subhash Subramanyam.

Hi Subash,

I need few more info from you before I troubleshoot the issue.

1) What was the intial folder your Analysis Service resides? ex: E:\program files\mssql.1\olap\bin

2) What was the original instance name and what did you rename to?

3) Do you get this error from asinstancerename tool?

Thanks,

Deva

Issue in browsing msxisapi.dll please help

Hi all, I installed several times the xml analysis provider but I am
having severe issues in having it working on a Windows 2003 server
machine. I followed all the described steps including adding and
enabling a Web service extension for that dll. Also read and execute
permissions are setted up; all seems exactly the same to what I did
other times...but I am unable to browse it from that machine.

Any help is sooo appreciated,

Thanks and regards

ElenaWhat type of error are you getting exactly?

Are you able to browse it from other machines?

> Elena|||There are several discussions of issues with this DLL:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group...lr=&sa=N&tab=wg

If this doesn't help, you should post some more information - which
version/servicepack of MSSQL, what error you get, which steps you
followed etc.

Simon|||Hi all, thanks for the reply. I don't get any message...just it
stalls...please help it is very urgent !

Thanks and regards

If you want to rely on newsgroups, microsoft.public.sqlserver.xml
may be your best bet.

But if it's very urgent, you should probably consider open a case with
Microsoft.

Isstallation - licenses

Hi,
Is there any general recommendation if SSRS should be on the same
server/different server than the SQL Server Database and Analysis services?
Can the SSRS be installed on another(remote ) server than the SSDS andSSAS?
IS there any licensing problems if this is done?
Thanks.Depends on the server hardware, load etc. Yes you can install RS on a
different machine but you need to buy another SQL Server server license for
whatever box RS is installed on. For instance, if you do a web farm you
would need the license for each box.
