Issue with Exporting

I have read previous posts and am still having an issue. Our production
server is running SP1 and still exports Excel Files as web archive format.
So the files end up being 10 to 20 MB and not 1 MB. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance

shown when you go to //servername/reportserver ?
SP1 definitely exports as native. Prior to SP1 you could not open the Excel
export file in Excel 2000, after SP1 I could. This is because of a format
change.

Also, how are you getting the excel export? Are you rendering via URL or
Webservices or are you just using the reportmanager portal and selected
export?
What happens if you export from Visual Studio when doing a preview from
there (I assume you have upgraded the visual studio Report Designer as well,
SP1 needed to be applied at both).

SP1 is installed and i get the issue either way. Using a subscription or
going to the portal and exporting manually. Also on my local machine i am
using Visual Studio to export and i get the same result.

>|||I have created a test report to show you my issue. This is a very small test
but it shows what is going on with my reports. Report 1 is from Visual
Studio using the Export to Excel feature. Report 2 is me taking that file
and opening it. I click Save As. and it shows up as it being saved as a
MHTML document. If i select Excel XLS and resave the same document it comes
out as 375K and not 3MB. Any suggestions?
If you wanna see what i see just open the TestSizeReport.xls in Excel and
hit save as to see it show MHTML as the save as filetype. For some reason it
places the name of the file in Quotes and forces it to use the extension
XLS. I am using Office XP Professional also if your wondering.

>|||With the report you emailed me I see the same thing you do, it is not in
Excel format. However, when I export a report of mine it is in Excel format
and it is significantly smaller than what you are seeing. I did a 15 page
report and it was 700K. A single page report was 18K. When I open it in
Excel and do a save as it says Excel workbook. Again, what I would expect
but not what I see with the report you sent me.
When you export you should end up with IE with the URL that performed the
export. Mine looked like this:
http://cgincin2/ReportServer?%2fInventory%2fBy+WSP+Summary&RegulatedStatus=Y&rs%3aCommand=Render&rs%3AFormat=EXCEL
What does yours look like?
Also, do you have an old version of Excel around (Excel 2000, Excel 97). It
seems to me that for whatever reason that maybe you are still getting Excel
in the old format (pre-SP1), not the native format. If so, you would not be
able to open it up in Excel 2000 or 97.
If you have the same type of URL as I show above then my suggestion is to
re-apply the SP1 upgrade. Not sure how it would happen and I have never seen
it but something is just not right with your installation (assuming, as I
said, that you have the same type of URL as I do).

Running this on my server comes back with a 770K file now with a reapply of
the SP1. But its still an issue because if I open and resave the same
document it is only 400K. We have reports running that come up as 80MB.
Which is definitely too big for our clients to open. There systems lock up
when trying to open them. Even my system which is a IBM T40 Series. 2 Gig of
RAM we/ 1.4 centrino.
Any reason why it would still be larger than normal?

If so, then it looks like reapplying sp1 solved the problem.
I don't know about why it gets smaller when you save it. Mine got larger
when I saved it. Could be that yours has many more columns that mine does
and it affects how it creates it, it doesn't create it as efficiently. Just
a guess.
So an 80 MB file would be 40 MB when saved. This is still huge. Do they
really need all that data? I work with process engineers pulling over
process data and usually they can isolate a smaller period of time they are
interested in.
If they are actually number crunching in Excel with this data then my
suggestion is to see how exporting in csv works. What size do you get with
that. I have seen that users of Excel tend to be pretty comfortable opening
up csv files.
One of the things I have seen with RS is that it is very easy to create new
ways for people to get data so previous ways of working (having a report
have everything including the kitchen sink in it) is not necessary.

interested in summaries and then want to drill into data. The drill through
capabilities are great for this. On demand reporting (versus batching which
is essentially what you are doing here). They might be used to it one way. A
human does not look at thousands of rows of data (which is what you have
with your report). I bet they end up just searching through it to get what
they want. I might have been the only way to do it before but now you can
create reports that are so fast and easy to use that they could do it
differently. As I said, 40 Meg Excel file (which would be the absolute best
you would get even if RS did exactly the same as Excel) is a huge file.
Still, if they have to have it then I suggest seeing how big CSV is. Going
with CSV should also put less strain on RS when it is rendering it. Although
this big is going to be a problem I bet. RS does everything in RAM and
extremely large reports can bring it to its knees. Again, the design
philosophy is to be fast and extremely easy for the end user to get reports
on demand (drill down, drill through, jump to another report etc). I think
that you are going to find it problematic running this report unless you can
run it at off peak times.

>|||We do run this during off hours at night. But we had to stop because of the
large report it was creating that nobody could open. I wonder if there is a
better method. I have tried to export to CSV and even though it is
considerably smaller it proves to be a pain because when you open it up in
Excel it only inserts data in column A. It doesn't break the lines apart
into each column that it should. Trying to make it as user friendly as
possible.

>|||Until SP1 my Excel users had to use the CSV option. Then they have to go
through the step of taking the data that is all in one column and getting it
split into individual columns. Not hard but definitely not user friendly.
